Convalesce with Books
© Beverley Paine, 2004
I can't imagine sitting in a hospital bed now without a pile of books or magazines on my knees. When my children were unwell I'd make a bed on the couch for them and surround them with lots of reading material that ranged from novels, to picture books, comic books, magazines, non-fiction titles with lots of pictures, books with small and large print (for when eyes get tired). When I didn't have time to sit and play card, dice or board games, or in between favourite programs or a specially borrowed movie, the child had plenty to read.
Simple craft and art activities, together with their personal journal or a scrapbook and a lush green pot plant nearby completed the sick-bed scene. Being happily occupied can often divert attention from illness and pain.
