Build A Positive Attitude Using Your Heroes
© Beverley Paine, 2005
"The road that is built in hope is more pleasant to the traveller than the road built in despair, even though they both lead to the same destination." Marion Zimmer Bradley
All too often my day is ruined by my attitude or mood. Sometimes it's beyond my control, as when my body reacts to food or environmental triggers. It took a long time for me to recognise that emotional disturbance was a symptom, in the same way as asthma, hives or hay-fever. Even so, I've learned that it is possible to mediate the effect of depressed mood by staying positive.
It helps to have a collection of quotes from my personal heroes - people who I look up to, admire and wish to emulate in some way. Over the years I've collected quotes in a file - most of them are on my web page http://homeschoolaustralia.beverleypaine.com/articles/quotes.html
Something said by our heroes and role models have far more impact than a thousand snide or hurtful remarks from people that don't understand us, our situation, or have little empathy for us.
When you're studying superheroes or mythical heroes, or famous men and women from history, or great religious leaders encourage your children to add sayings by these great people (even the fictional ones!) to their collection of quotes. They can make posters of the ones that have the most impact on their lives right now and put these posters in a prominent place in their bedrooms. One of my favourite fictional quotes comes from Yoda of Star Wars fame: "Try not, do".
What is one of your favourite quotes from your personal heroes? Type it out and email it to yourself right now!
